The guinea pig comes from South America and was first domesticated in about 5000BC. Traders brought guinea pigs back to Europe where they became popular pets and have remained so ever since.
Guinea pigs naturally live on grass and have specialised teeth that are well suited to grinding plant matter. They can benefit from feeding on fresh hay and must optain vitamin C from feeding on fresh, raw fruit and vegetables.
